Leonard Albert known as ‘Lenny’ was on Thursday sentenced to 23-years imprisonment by Justice Simone Morris- Ramlall at the High Court, after being found guilty of raping a six-year-old boy on June 9, 2012.

Albert, a 46-year-old cook of Port Kaituma, will become eligible for parole after serving 20 years.

On Thursday, Probation Officer Collis Jacob, who is attached to the Port Kaituma Welfare Office told the court that Albert was described as a humble person in his village.

However, Jacob noted that a recent report was made against Albert by a woman who alleged that he molested her son; this matter is currently under investigation.

The Probation Officer explained to the court that Albert strongly denies committing the act, but stated that God is on his side and he is only worried about the $12M loan he has to repay for his home.

As it relates to the victim who is now aged 14, Jacob explained that he feels ashamed and wants Albert to be jailed.

The victim’s mother, Jacobs said, explained that her son is withdrawn and distrustful of people around him to which counselling is needed for him to overcome the trauma.

State Prosecutor Tuanna Hardy, during her address to the court, explained that the case revolves around the theme of “betrayal of trust” and Albert showed no signs of remorse and is only concerned about his loan.

“Children are vulnerable and should be protected,” Prosecutor Hardy told the court.

Albert’s attorney, Maxwell McKay during his plea of mitigation told the court that his client is the father of five and is the sole breadwinner for his family.

Justice Morris-Ramlall, before imposing the sentence, considered the nature and gravity of the charge along with the revelation that Albert is being investigated for a similar matter.

She also considered that he showed no remorse and maintained his innocence, although he was found guilty.

The Judge started her sentencing at a base of 25 years and subtracted two years based on the plea of mitigation.

The Judge also ordered that Albert is exposed to educational classes while behind bars.
