The Opposition Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) has rejected elections by the end of February, as the President has been advised by the Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

“Today our country has entered a full-blown dictatorship,” said Irfaan Ali, the presidential candidate of the PPP. Supporters of the party and others launched a noon protest at the Pegasus Hotel where the President is due to address a luncheon of the Guyana Manufacturers Association.

The protestors stood in the way of the entrance to the hotel, forcing the President to find an alternative location to enter the hotel. The Police are out in full force at the location.

The President nor the government has responded to the advice tendered by the GECOM chair not the statement from the diplomatic community which has deemed the government unconstitutional after September 18.

“We have dictators occupying the space of government,” said Ali on the protest line.

“Elections must be held by the end of November,” Ali stated.

Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo will speak at a press conference on the issue Thursday afternoon.
