A group of protestors, led by the opposition Peoples’ Progressive Party (PPP), disrupted the speech of President David Granger at a luncheon hosted by the Guyana Manufacturers and Services Association (GMSA).

The protests erupted when the President began his speech by saying that he survived “hooliganism” on entering the venue.

The protestors had sought to block the President from entering the hotel and his security party had him entered the hotel at an alternative route.

The President began his address a few hours after he was handed advice by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) that it will be able to run off the polls by the end of February.

The PPP and the diplomatic community have said the government is now unconstitutional as the three-month deadline has expired since the final ruling of the Caribbean Court of Justice on the legal challenges to the December 21 No Confidence motion.

During his speech, the President insisted that his government has complied with the rulings of the courts on the legal challenges.
