Taxi driver charged with rape of girl, 12

A 32-year-old taxi driver was on Tuesday remanded to prison by the Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for allegedly raping a 12-year-old schoolgirl.

Neville Thomas was not required to plead to the charge, which alleged that between April 2019 and May 2019 at a location on the East Bank of Demerara, he engaged in sexual penetration with a child under the age of 16.

According to reports, Thomas is attached to a popular taxi service and he is known to the victim and her parents.

It is alleged that during the period in question, Thomas picked up the victim from school and took her to a hotel, where he raped her.

The matter was reported to the Police and Thomas was arrested.

The Chief Magistrate remanded Thomas to prison until October 3, 2019
