President David Granger Tuesday evening joined with the Mexican Embassy in Georgetown to celebrate the 209th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of Mexico at a reception at the Marriott Hotel.

The Head of State used the opportunity to make it clear that while Guyana and Mexico have enjoyed cordial relations over four decades, they have not interfered in each other’s internal affairs.

“Guyana and Mexico are committed also to mutual non-interference in each other’s internal affairs,” the President said as he paused and looked around the room where the Ambassador of the United States Sarah Ann-Lynch, Deputy UK High Commissioner to Guyana Ray Davidson and other diplomats were present.

The US, UK and European Union on September 19 issued a joint statement calling on the President to set a date immediately for elections. In a statement to the media subsequently, the Head of State said foreign missions should allow his government to resolve its issues.

Meanwhile, President Granger expressed gratitude to Mexico for its partnerships in the areas of governance of the emerging petroleum sector, the provision of scholarships in advanced Agriculture and Civil Engineering among others, technical cooperation in disaster management and trade.

“Mexico remains the single, largest export destination for Guyana’s rice. We are open to exploring export avenues for traditional and non- traditional products in order to strengthen initiatives aimed at increasing bilateral trade,” the President said in his address.

Mexican Ambassador to Guyana, Jose Omar Hurtado Contreras was only accredited to Guyana one week ago. Delivering his first public address, the Ambassador noted that he will work to intensify cooperation between the countries.

“I will not only continue but intensify it (cooperation),” the Ambassador said.
