After eight defeats spread across three seasons, Barbados Tridents have finally won at home, toppling powerhouses Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) by 63 runs at the Kensington Oval Thursday evening in Match 23 of the Hero Caribbean Premier League.

After racking up an imposing 192-5, Tridents blew away TKR with some inspired bowling, led by leggie Hayden Walsh Jr., who had 5-19, including three wickets in four balls, to send shockwaves through a passionate crowd.

They were hyped throughout the match, after homeboy Johnathan Carter and Johnson Charles laid the platform for the Jean-Paul Duminy six-hitting show.

Defending champions TKR were also off to a fast start. Sunil Narine and Lendl Simmons got to 30 in just 2.1 overs and things looked promising with some sloppy errors in the field. It allowed TKR to reach 67-2 after the first six.

From a star with the bat, Duminy became a star in the field. He ran from long-on to straight long-off and pulled of a one-handed stunner, to send danger man Colin Munro back in the hut.

It proved to be a significant booster for both the crowd and players.

Walsh bowled a struggling Denesh Ramdin and an over later he produced the magic, snipping out Kieron Pollard, Jimmy Neesham and Seekkuge Prasanna to completely dent the run chase in the 11th over.

He got his fifth with one that bounced and took the top-edge of Darren Bravo, who made 28.

Tridents got their first wicket-less ower play at home this season, via a change in batting order; Charles found new partnership in Carter and they laid a solid and hasty stand of 110 within 14 overs.

The stand quelled the usual attacking prowess of Ali Khan and Narine. Every six, every four galvanised a crowd who were desperate to see their team win at home after eight matches.

Carter was the first to go for 51 (5x4s; 1×6) from 46 balls when he took on Narine, but was snapped up by a tumbling catch by Munro. One brought two, as Charles got ambitious against Khary Pierre.

He went for a 38-ball 58 (8x4s) and it brought the man of the night, Duminy, who wasted little time to start a brutal and historic assault.

The South African smashed 65 from just 20 balls, hitting seven maximums and four fours on his way to the fastest CPL fifty off just 15 balls.

The biggest assault came against Khan in the 18th over which yielded 24 runs; it went 1,6,6,4,6,1. Every hit into the stand had the passionate crowd screaming “more”, “more”.

The next over Jimmy Neesham faced a similar fate, his lone over being ransacked for 25 runs off the bat of Duminy. The onslaught ended in the final over when Pollard got Duminy to hammer one straight to cover. Tridents were still able to yield 63 in the final three overs.

Tridents play St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots on Saturday, while TKR return home to play Guyana Amazon Warriors on Monday at the Queen’s Park Oval.
