Unbeaten Khan takes lead in GAICO Chess tournament

Candidate Master and former National Champion Taffin Khan outplayed his closest rival Loris Nathoo in the latest round to secure sole possession of the leadership position in the GAICO Construction Grand Prix Chess Tournament at the National Racquet Centre.

The tense fourth round encounter between the two ended when Nathoo conceded defeat after 34 moves. Khan is now on four points following four straight wins. Former National Champion Wendell Meusa is his next main opponent in line with three and a half points.

The remaining three of seven rounds will be played off this weekend and the winners in both the Junior and Senior categories will be announced, including the Best Female Player. The tournament attracted six players from the distaff side.

The inaugural tournament is the first in a series to attract the best chess players to represent Guyana at the 2020 Chess Olympiad in Russia.
