Priyanna Ramdhani cops silver in first-ever tournament in Canada

Guyana’s top female badminton player, Priyanna Ramdhani, made an early statement in Canada, winning her first-ever tournament in the country at the weekend.

The 17-year-old national and Caribbean age group champion, who is on scholarship at Olds College, copped silver at the YONEX AJC Airdrie Junior Under-19 competition in Alberta.

Ramdhani, pursuing a Diploma in Business and Sports Management, took a break from studies to play in the tournament and made it to the final, losing to Tai Clark 12-21, 20-22.

Priyanna qualified for the final by getting past Emilia Hayland of Glencoe Club 21-9, 21-6 at the semi-final. Prior to that, she defeated Roya Mehri of the Goa Badminton Tao Club 21-10, 21-5 and Chole Crump of Edison Badminton Centre 21-8, 21-6 in the Group B Playoff matches.

Ramdhani will be on court again this weekend (October 4-6) when she competes in the YONEX Albert Series #1 in Calgary. She will compete in the Ladies Singles, Ladies Doubles with Mary Smith and Mixed Doubles with brother Narayan Ramdhani, who is also on scholarship in Canada.
