Drivers detained after fatal accident on West Coast

Police have detained two drivers, 23-year-old Totaram Munishwar and 20-year-old Saeed Ali, after they were reportedly racing along the West Coast Demerara public road after midnight on Monday.

The car being driven by Munishwar – PVV 4886 – upon approaching the turn at De Kinderen overtook the other car, but another vehicle was proceeding in the opposite direction, causing the driver to swerve off the road and lost control.

The car crashed into the fence and turned turtle at about 00:30hrs. As a result, 23-year-old Leroy Cummings of Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, died.

Two other occupants – Raymond Dimgo and 23-year-old Lennox Cummings – received minor injuries.

They were all taken out of the car and rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital.

Leroy Cummings was subsequently transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The News Room understands that both drivers along with occupants were at a bar consuming alcohol before the accident.

Both drivers were tested for alcohol and were found to be above the legal limit.

Police said they are cooperating with investigators.
