As the cycling season motors to an end, competitive action returns to the inner circuit of the National Park this Saturday (October 26) with an 11-race programme organised by national cycling coach Hassan Mohamed.

The eighth annual Payless Variety Store event will pedal off at 09:00h, and according to Mohamed, a competitive event is in the making. Once again the riders would use the event to gain valuable points as the 2019 season draws to a close.

Briton John, the 2018 winner, won the feature 35-lap School Boys and Invitational race in a time of one hour, 17 minutes, 44.94 seconds, ahead of Paul DeNobrega.

John had fended off DeNobrega in a heated sprint finish, while the top six was rounded off by Junior Niles, Christopher Griffith, Alex Mendes and Paul Choo Wee Nam in that order.

As was the case last year, eight prime prizes would be up for grabs.

Also in the winners’ row last season were Niles in the Veterans Under-50, Tavishte Persaud in the BMX Boys and Girls 6-9, Linden Blackman in the Veterans Over-50 and Briton John in the Juveniles 10-lap event.

Mohamed said he in anticipating another competitive meet, as riders would be looking to boost their ranking points on the Guyana Cycling News charts.

The top performers in the various categories would be honoured for their exploits at the end of 2019.

Mohamed also expressed gratitude to the management and staff of Payless Variety Store for their consistent support of cycling, adding that corporate backing is necessary for the sport to remain active and visible.

Representatives of Payless Variety Store are expected to witness the day’s activities and later assist in the presentation of prizes.
