A 22-year-old man died Wednesday after he decided to go for a swim during a fishing trip at the Topoo Village Pump Station Canal on the Corentyne at around 15:30hrs.

Dead is Joseph ‘Lloyd’ Bownauth, a carpenter of Belvedere Corentyne, Berbice.

The News Room understands that Bownauth and two friends, including a teenager, ventured to the area for an afternoon of fishing during which he went for a swim and never resurfaced.

Bownauth was described as a humorous, “easy-going and joyful person”.

His friends claimed that when they saw him struggling in the water, they thought he was joking because he is a good swimmer.

But they soon realized he was not and then solicited the help of villagers. Several persons dived in the canal and Bownauth’s body was discovered an hour later.

The body is at the Ramoo’s funeral home awaiting a post mortem examination.

The young carpenter was expecting his first child with his spouse.
