20 teams to contest Turbo knockout football

The third installment of the Turbo straight knockout football tournament kicks off November 9 and the contesting teams have been increased to twenty.

Defending champions Northern Rangers, Georgetown Football Club, Riddim Squad, G.T Panthers, Black Pearl Football Club, Pele Football Club, Eastveldt Football Club, Bacons Football Club, Buxton Stars FC, Mahaica Determinators, Dynamic FC, Timerhi Panthers FC, Pouderoyen FC, Uitvuglt FC, Santos FC U-20, Buxton FC U-20 and Fruta Conquerors FC U-20 are the teams confirmed.

They will battle for the $400,000 first place, while second to fourth will pocket $200,000, $100,000 and $50,000 respectively. Prizes will also be awarded to the Most Valuable Player, Highest Goalscorer and Best Goalkeeper at the final slated for Friday, December 9, at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.

At the launch Tuesday, Brand Manager of Turbo Energy drink, Raymond Govinda, stated, “Today is another example of Guyana Beverage Inc. unwavering support and commitment towards sports development in Guyana. This year, we would have expanded to into more sports; it is fitting that we continue with this knockout tournament. We believe this tournament will provide the perfect platform for talents to be discovered.”

National Under-20 Coach Wayne Dover noted the timely nature of the events by Petra Organisation has given them opportunities to scout for youth players given inclusion of Under-20 teams from the Elite League clubs.

According to Dover, there will be a National Under-20 tournament in February and this tournament plays right in alignment regarding preparation for some players.

Earlier this month, U-20 teams from Santos and Conquerors clashed in the final of the senior Limacol tournament, having played unbeaten throughout the tournament.
