Essequibo youth killed by speeding, drunk driver
Police are investigating an accident which occurred at Everygreen, Essequibo Coast at about 19:00hrs on Monday, which claimed the life of a 21-year-old pedal cyclist, Govindra Persaud.
Persaud of Somerset and Berks Essequibo, was struck down by a black fielder wagon bearing registration number motor car PXX 6207 and driven by a 21-year-old male of Charity, Essequibo Coast.
The driver told Police that he was proceeding at a fast rate on the public road when he observed the pedal cyclist at about ten feet ahead of him, riding in a zig-zag manner and proceeding in the same direction.
The driver said he sounded his horn and applied brakes but due to the close distance, the left side front of his car collided with the rear wheel of the pedal cycle.
As a result, the young cyclist was flung into the air and landed some distance ahead along the roadway. He received injuries to his head and other parts of the body; he was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Charity Hospital where he was examined and referred to the Suddie Hospital.
Persaud died while being transferred to the Suddie Hospital.
A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver of the car found that he was above the legal limit of alcohol.
