A 40-year-old man who was serving a 15-year sentence for the offence of rape died on Tuesday at the Mazaruni Prison in Region 7.
The News Room understands that Standford Dick, formerly of Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, complained at around 04:05hrs of pains in his chest and abdomen.
Police said he was escorted to the Bartica Hospital where he was subsequently admitted and died while receiving treatment.
A post mortem examination will be performed sometime this week. The News Room understands that Dick was admitted to the prison on August 29, 2011, after he was convicted of rape.
