Repeat offender jailed for stealing $10k from sister

A 24-year-Houston Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara resident was on Friday sentenced to six months imprisonment for stealing $10,000 from his sister’s handbag.

Kevin Christopher Balkaran appeared before City Magistrate Dylon Bess and admitted that he committed the act on November 14, 2019.

According to reports, on the day in question Melissa Balkaran secured her purse in her bedroom and went out but when she returned she caught her brother with the purse and the money.

She reported the matter to the Police after Kevin reportedly threatened to kill her.

In 2018, Kevin was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment for stealing a man’s cell phone and in August 2016 he was sentenced to 18 months for breaking into his neighbour’s home.

In May 2016, he was sentenced to three months imprisonment for threatening to kill his mother Usha Balkaran. In 2015, Balkaran was convicted on two separate charges for threatening his mother. He served four months on each occasion.
