20 years jail for fisherman who raped woman in 2016

A fisherman was on Tuesday sentenced to 20-years imprisonment for raping a young woman at the Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara seashore in 2016.

Jaipaul Hitlall called ‘Latta’ formerly of Anna Catherina, Sea View, West Coast Demerara was on trial before Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall at the Demerara High Court.

After deliberating on Tuesday, a 12-member jury found Hitlall guilty of engaging in sexual penetration with a woman on December 29, 2016, at Cornelia Ida. He was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment.

According to reports, on the day in question, the victim was washing her shoe when Hitlall grabbed and dragged her into the water and forced her to have sex.

The victim, who had a sharp object in her possession, stabbed Hitlall to his shoulder and temple but he did not give up and instead dragged her to a boat where he raped her again.

The victim reported the incident to the Police.

Hitlall is currently on remand for the rape and murder of 65-year-old Bibi Keniez at her Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara home on October 2, 2016.
