GMR&SC pushing to host FIA Motorsport Games in 2021
The Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) has an illustrious goal to host the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) Motorsport Games, commonly called ‘Motor Racing Olympics’ in 2021.
GMR&SC President Rameez Mohamed made the disclosure to News Room Sport on Sunday, after the successful hosting of the ‘Clash of Champions’ at South Dakota Circuit.
“We have big plans for next year, as well as 2021. We actually met with the FIA and they are planning to do ‘Motor Racing Olympics’ in the Caribbean. I had flown out to meet with some FIA officials in Panama a few weeks back and we are trying to convince them to host it here in Guyana,” Mohamed stated.
The inaugural FIA Motorsport Games was held in Roma from November 1-3, 2019. It featured GT3-spec cars, TCR Touring Car, Formula 4, drifting, a karting slalom and eSports disciplines.
The event was contested in Olympics-style, but because machine-based or motorised sports are not recognised by the Olympic Games organisation they will not be recognised as an Olympic event.
‘Motorised’ events were held at the 1900 and 1908 Summer Olympics, but they are not now regarded as official Olympic events.
Team Russia won the Games, competing against teams from Italy, Australia, Netherlands, Ukraine, Japan, Belgium, Czech Republic, Costa Rica, Germany, Poland, Finland and Slovakia.
Meanwhile, Mohamed stated he was happy with the turnout of fans on Sunday. Despite some rain, Mohamed deemed the event very successful and competitive.
