Female driver in custody for accident that killed Police officer
Police Headquarters said Monday a 34-year-old female driver of Norton and Haley Streets, Wortmanville, Georgetown is in police custody assisting with the investigations into the tragic accident that claimed the life of Carl Roach, a police officer.
After a breathalyzer test, the female driver was found to be below the prescribed alcohol limit.
Inquiries disclosed that motor car bearing license plates PMM 2528 was proceeding east along the northern side of Brickdam Public Road while the motorcycle being driven by Roach was proceeding west along the southern side of the road, when the accident occurred just after midnight Sunday.
Police said both vehicles approached Chalmers Place, where there is an intersection; according to reports the female driver reportedly turned south into the path of motorcycle causing the collision.
As a result, the motorcyclist was flung some distance hitting a light pole on the southern side of the road and sustained injuries about the body.
He was pronounced dead on the scene by a doctor and the body is presently at Lyken’s Funeral Home awaiting a post mortem examination.
Twenty-four-old Roach of Lot 1 Water Street, Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara was the father of a four-year-old girl.
The Guyana Police Force extended condolences to the immediate family, relatives and friends on the tragic passing of Constable Roach, who Police Headquarters said was a dedicated Police officer.
