Teen charged with brutal beating of Cane Grove man who is now paralyzed

A 19-year-old labourer was on Tuesday charged with the attempted murder of 22-year-old Hansraj Durga called Kevin.

Jermain Holder of Virginia Village, Cane Grove on the East Coast of Demerara appeared before Magistrate Marissa Mittelhozer at the Mahaica Magistrate’s Court and was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

Holder was released on $100,000 bail. The case has been postponed to December 17, 2019, for statements.

Durga of Saywah, Cane Grove was brutally beaten by three men while at a wedding house on November 3. His injuries were so severe that he is now paralyzed on the right side of the body. He was a machine operator at the Cane Grove Conservancy.

Durga also suffered memory loss while the vision in his left eye is also affected. He presently cannot do anything for himself and is expected to start physical therapy soon.

The young man’s aunt, Asha Singh had told the News Room that Durga was trying to make peace during an argument between the three men and another relative when he was attacked.

The aunt said she found him in an unconscious state lying in a pool of blood.
