Guyanese Chelsea Edghill in Finland prepping for Olympics
Chelsea Edghill’s road to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will see her travelling to Finland to participate in the Finland Open Table Tennis Championships.
The Finland Open Championship will be used as part of her Olympic Qualification preparation, given the fact that the tournament is an ITTF World Circuit event.
The tournament started December 5 and will conclude on December 9. Edghill traveled with Coach Tony Rato of Portugal and will compete in Women Singles event.
According to the Guyana Table Tennis Association, it represents the first time a player from Guyana will be participating in a Senior World circuit event.
Following her participation in Finland, Edghill will then travel to Romania to train and play in competition before returning to Portugal to prepare for other key engagements.
This tournament is also geared towards assessing the progress made in the implementation of several new elements of her game in high level competitive environment and picking up valuable ranking points.
Edghill, a former junior Olympian, and recent graduate from the Lindenwood University with degree in chemistry, has an extensive resume with several junior sports women title.
She’s the national champion, 2018 Caribbean Women U-21 champion, Caribbean Women’s Doubles champion, Caribbean Women’s bronze medallist 2019, several collegiate tournaments wins, Caribbean Cadet and Junior champion, Caribbean Women’s team silver medallist 2018 and 2019. She is currently training and playing competition in Portugal.
