The Rotary Club of Demerara on Sunday hosted an anniversary luncheon to celebrate 26 years as an organisation working to better the lives of the less fortunate.

The celebration was held at Parc Rayne located at Rahaman’s Park and saw the induction of five members: Dominique Cameron, Tariq Jagnarine, Dr Keisha Chin, Sohan Shetty and Ronald Nandalall.

“I found out about the organisation through a friend who invited me to the club. I’m very honoured and very happy; it’s not just the title of becoming a Rotarian, you also have to understand what it signifies to become a Rotarian and that is to dedicate yourself to networking with others to provide a service” Dr Chin told the News Room during an interview.

Tariq Jagnarine, a medicine specialist, said he wanted to be part of something fulfilling.

President of the club, Hansraj ‘Richie’ Singh

“I first learnt of Rotary Demerara through an outreach that they would have done. They’re known for their medical outreaches, I wanted to become part of something that is so fulfilling. I’m overjoyed and thankful for being part of such a charitable prestigious and worldwide organization.”

Meanwhile, President of the club, Hansraj ‘Richie’ Singh said there were some challenges in the 26 years.

“I think 26 years of existence for the Rotary Club of Demerara is a very happy feeling. Along the way, we would have had our fair share of challenges and so on but this is a very good time for us.

“The Rotary Club of Demerara is in a place where we are transforming from old Rotary ways to new Rotary ways even while adding newer members who are actively participating,” Singh said.

The club plans to move forward with their chartable service throughout the Christmas season and beyond.
