Man found dead in Suddie Police Station lockups

Police are investigating the death of a 25-year-old man of Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam, Berbice. He was found hanging in the Suddie Police Station Lockups.

Police headquarters in a statement said the prisoner, Steffon Smith, known as Blacka or Blackboy, was discovered at about 10:40 hours on Thursday hanging to the western ventilation grill in the cell.

Smith was on remand on charges of attempt to commit murder and “wounding with intent” committed on Michael Marco, 28. The incident occurred in the Potaro Region on January 26, 2016.

Police said Smith was seen by a psychiatrist on December 09, to ascertain whether he was fit to stand trial at the Suddie Court.

He attended court on December 11 and was further remanded until January 8, 2020.

The body is at Suddie mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination.
