KFC School Football: Big opening wins for Annai and Lodge

Annai Secondary lads are here to compete, that is without question after they dominated 90 minutes of play against Annandale Secondary when the second KFC Goodwill Under-18 School football tournament kicked off at the weekend at the Guyana Football Federation’s National Training Centre at Providence.

The Region Nine side, who were runners-up last year, tucked in nine goals against the East Coast Demerara unit, who are usually the ones doing such damage in other tournaments.

Captain Amir Robertson led the rout with a hat-trick via second half goals in the 57th, 67th and 69th minutes. Robertson led a well-organised attacking unit who worked in great tandem to expose space in Annandale’s backline.

The quick switch in wings on offensive plays was another hallmark along with the urge to take as many shots on goal as possible. The attacking prowess quickly paid virtue with Junior Rodrigues netting the first of his two goals in the seventh minute while his other came in the 64th.

Italo Benjamin (24th, 54th), Raul Swan (52th) and Brimley Moses (78th) were other players on the score sheet.

Omari Glasgow worked overtime to orchestrate goals, but lacked the necessary support

Where it went wrong for Annandale was first not having a ‘bench’ and a lack of effort to get more ‘legs’ in the box when marque player Omari Glasgow went hunting for goals. There was some respite, if any, when Colin Henriques netted in the 72nd.

In the other match, Lodge Secondary defeated Marian Academy 6-1 with the dynamic Dorwin George netting a hat-trick with goals coming in the 25th, 30th and 65th, while teammates Earl Grant (27th), Curt Edwards (61st) and Shemroy Myers (69th) ensured they sealed the vital three points.

The talented Daniel Lowe scored for Marian in the 49th.

Action continues on Monday with Lodge playing Waramadong from 13:00h followed by defending champions Shiva Boys Hindu College and Annai from 15:00h.
