$5M ‘I Love Guyana’ sign unveiled

Already grabbing attention as the latest national symbol to generate pride among Guyanese, the ‘I Love Guyana’ sign was formally unveiled on Wednesday.

Several businesses joined with the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) to construct the edifice which now forms part of Guyana’s most picturesque places.

Senior city officials joined major players in Guyana’s tourism and private sectors Wednesday morning for the official launch of an oversized 3-dimensional sign.

Located in Kingston, Georgetown and in close proximity to Guyana’s famous Umana Yana and the Marine Turtle Monument, the new structure was constructed to the tune of $5 million.

Addressing the gathering, President of THAG Mitra Ramkumar explained that the sign is intended to serve as a gathering point for visitors who wish to celebrate their travels here.

He said that through the sharing of photos and videos, visitors will create a positive image of destination Guyana on the international scene.

“You may have noticed that we branded this area the ‘I Love Guyana’ tourism park. The location will serve as a gathering point for visitors as well as a starting and culminating point for city tours,” he added.

Ramkumar said the area was strategically chosen to help boost tourism in and around the capital city, Georgetown.

THAG received support from Impressions and the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) in bringing the project to fruition.

Present at the simple commissioning ceremony was Mayor of Georgetown Ubraj Narine who said the 12×30 feet sign is one of love and appreciation.

“It’s a historic move in the city and I the Mayor of Georgetown is proud to be part of such. Today we all can say will remain the day we Guyanese show our undying love for our city by unveiling this sign which also embeds our unity.”

The Mayor called on Guyanese to care for national symbols like this and thanked the private sector for its input in the process.

The sign will remain on the lawns of GBTI headquarters in Kingston and a collaborative approach will be taken to ensure its upkeep.
