The Guyana Defence Force and Fruta Conquerors will face each other on January 1, 2020, with one thing on their minds- the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super 16 trophy and accompanying two million dollars cash prize.

The two teams have earned the right to contest the championship game after recording wins in the semi-finals on Sunday evening at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda.

GDF advanced to the final via a 4-2 win over Police, while Fruta Conquerors had to dig deep to edge Santos 2-1.

GDF took an early lead through a Delroy Fraser goal in the 25th minute, before a Pernell Shultz double (45+2 and 50th minutes) gave Police the ascendancy.

With the clock ticking away, it appeared the Police were heading to the final, however GDF stormed back with three unanswered goals in the space of eight minutes to seal a berth in the championship game.

Travis Henry levelled proceedings in the 82nd minute, and three minutes later Delwin Fraser put the army men in the lead 3-2. Sherwin Caesar then put the finishing touches to the outcome, scoring in the 90+1 minute.

In the other semi-final, a late goal by Ryan Hackett secured Conquerors’ passage to the final, as he scored in the 94th minute with the scores locked at 1-1.

Delon Lanferman had earlier put Conquerors in the lead in the 11th minute, before a second-half goal from Orin Yarde in the 58th minute brought the game level.

The final is fixed for the GFC ground, Bourda.
