The 81-year-old woman who was struck down on the pedestrian crossing at Nigg on the Corentyne, had just collected her pension and was heading home, relatives said.
Dead is Parvidi Ramcharran.
The woman lived a short distance away from the post office and was halfway along the pedestrian crossing when she was struck down by the speeding car.
Police Headquarters said the accident occurred at about 10:35hrs on the Nigg Public Road.
According to reports, the car was being driven by a 29-year-old man of Robb Street, Georgetown who was proceeding at a fast rate along the southern carriageway on the road when he slammed into Ramcharran who was crossing the road.
She sustained severe injuries to her head and body and was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver was tested negative for alcohol and is in custody assisting with the investigation.
