More football for East Coast Demerara after successful Village Cup
Organiser of the 592 Beer Inter-Village Football tournament, Eon ‘Father Moey’ Havercome, has pleaded for more football to be played on the East Coast Demerara after seeing the success of the recently concluded tournament.
In response, the Beer’s Brand Manager Seweon McGarrell, accepted the challenge and pledged further support.
The initial aim of Monday’s proceedings at ANSA McAL Trading Headquarters at Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, was to award outstanding performers for their efforts in the tournament, which concluded on January 1.
Buxton/Friendship emerged winners after a tense final with Golden Grove.
Given the success and the passion showed by both players and fans from the East Coast, Havercome pleaded that this become a regular occurrence for the communities.
“All I want for us is to see football continue to play on the East Coast. This is where we are calling on the relevant authorities to make it happen. Football is an important tool on the East Coast. Football keeps the youths off the streets and away from idleness. This is where we have to use this tournament on the East Coast and make football a priority.”
He also clarified that the timing of the tournament was not aimed at competing with the national year-end Super16 tournament, organised by the Guyana Football Federation.
McGarrell answered the call and stated they will be in support of a next edition. “I can confidently say that given the positive feedback we have been getting and competitive spirit of the team, we decided we will do this annually and I expect you guys to come back even better.”
Buxton/Friendship copped G$500,000 for the win, while Golden Grove took home G$200,000. Third place went to Beterverwagting, who edged Paradise 2-1.
Due to the outcome, BV pocketed G$150,000 and a trophy, while Paradise walked away with G$100 000 and the corresponding trophy. The other teams to participate were Brush Dam, Annandale, Plaisance, Melanie, Mahaica, Victoria and Ann’s Grove.
