Shawn Harris known as “Shawny” was on Thursday sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after serving 20 years for the murder of Sunil Singh called ‘Grey’ which occurred in the vicinity of the Blue Martini nightclub in Kitty, Georgetown in 2017.

The 32-year-old mason of Pike Street, Kitty, Georgetown was sentenced by Justice Jo-Ann Barlow at the Demerara High Court.

In December last, a 12-member jury found Harris guilty of the charge which read that on February 5, 2017, at Owen Street, Kitty he murdered Singh by stabbing him to death.

Harris was represented by Attorney-at-law Maxwell McKay while the State was represented by prosecutors Shawnette Austin and Sarah Martin.

Justice Barlow reminded Harris that he was charged for escaping from the Lusignan Prison in 2018, and also has a prior conviction, however, the Judge told Harris she believes that there is a possibility that he can be reformed.

He was also ordered to undergo counselling for offenders of violent crimes.

Reports had indicated that three men wanted to enter the Blue Martini nightclub even though it was closed and a fight ensued. It is reported that the victim intervened and tried to make peace when he was beaten to the head by Harris.

The victim ran away but was pursued by Harris who stabbed him several times.

Harris was released from prison in 2016  after serving a sentence on a drug charge; he was also charged in connection with the Bank of Baroda robbery committed at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara on January 22, 2016.
