A 72-year-old pensioner was badly beaten with a mop stick in the wee hours of Sunday at his Pump Road, Strathspey, East Coast Demerara home.

Police Headquarters revealed that Deochand Ramsahoye was sleeping with his wife, Farida Ramsahoye, when they were awakened to four men hurling objects at the house and breaking windows at about 02:45hrs.

One of the pensioner’s sons Gavin Ramsahoye, along with his wife and a child were also home at the time of the incident.

The News Room understands that another son, Rajwant allegedly stole a gold chain from one of the suspects and they came to retrieve it.

Police said the four suspects subsequently gained entry to the upper flat of the house and proceeded to ransack it, forcing the family to flee and leave the pensioner behind.

The pensioner had suffered a stroke to the right side of his body and so he could not move without support.

After the suspects escaped, the family returned to find Ramsahoye covered in blood with lacerations to his face and about his body.

He was then taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he remains a patient under stable condition.

The four suspects were arrested and Police are treating the case as attempted murder.
