The Upper Demerara Cricket Association (UDCA) held its Annual General Meeting and Elections on Saturday last and elected its new office bearers for the 2020/2022 term of office.

Jermaine Figueira, Member of Parliament for the coalition government, was elected unopposed as President. Other elected members were: Lancelot Easton (Vice-President), Nolan Beekharry (Secretary), Sharon Williams (Assistant Secretary), Keith Sullivan (Treasurer), Wanda Richmond (Assistant Treasurer), Avery Trim (Marketing Manager), Flemroy Lambert (Public Relations Officer) and Mortimer Denny (Chairman of the Competitions Committee).

According to a release, Figueira outlined his plans for cricket development in Upper Demerara, which immediately seeks to rebuild proper playing surfaces at Mackenzie Sports Club and the Linden Technical Institute grounds.

He further stated that discussions are already underway with the East Bank and Guyana Cricket Boards to assist in the revival of cricket in the area in which little or no cricket has been played for almost a decade.

He complimented Bayroc and Mackenzie Clubs for the effort to bring back the game to the Mining Town.

The Guyana Cricket Board recently announced that the entity would be building an all-weather practice facility in Linden, giving some level of hope that the area would finally be getting some much-needed help for sports development.

The new Executive committee intends to hit the ground running with plans to start a sponsored competition as early as next week.

Clubs present at the meeting included Bayroc, Mackenzie Sports Club, Wisroc, Block 22, Blueberry Hill, Christianburg and Amelia’s Ward.
