A 37-year-old man was on Monday charged with causing the death of a 47-year-old motorcyclist during an accident at Craig Village, East Bank Demerara (EBD) on January 25.

Quacy Decunha of Supply, EBD appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Providence Magistrates’ Court, where he denied the charge of causing death by dangerous driving and five traffic-related offences.

The first charge alleged that Decunha drove motorcar PVV 8691 in a dangerous manner to the public causing the death of Dhanraj Budhram, 47, of Belle West, Canal Number Two, West Bank Demerara.

Other charges include failing to render assistance to Budhram, failure to report the accident and failure to stop after the accident.

He was also charged with driving without a license, breach of insurance by driving an uninsured motorcar.

He was granted $1.5M bail and was ordered to return to court on February 13, 2020.

According to reports, in the wee hours of Saturday, Budhram, who was employed at Gafoor’s Complex at Land of Canaan, was travelling home when Decunha crashed into him on the roadway.

Decunha fled the scene after the accident.

Budhram was taken to the Diamond Hospital, where he succumbed. Hours later, Decunha turned himself over to the Police in the company of his attorney.
