A 42-year-old miner is in a stable condition at the Mahdia Hospital where he is being treated for burns to his abdomen, hands and thighs which he sustained while rescuing three children from a burning house in Dandro Hill, Mahdia, Region 8 on Wednesday night.

The News Room understands that Seon Garraway was at the two-apartment wooden building with his 58-year-old roommate while three children – ages 8, 7 and 3 – were in their apartment watching TV.

Their parents and another sibling were at a shop at the time of the fire.

Police sources said that the fire erupted in Garraway’s apartment and quickly spread to the entire building at around 19:45hrs.

Garraway quickly rescued the children during which he received the burns. By the time the fire tender arrived, the entire one-storey structure was completely destroyed.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Eight persons are now homeless; the building was owned Winsbort Evans, a miner of Mahdia.
