Floyd Rammat was on Monday sentenced by Justice Sandil Kissoon to 30 years imprisonment for the April 2015 murder of city businessman, Abdul Farouk Ghanie, proprietor of Hamson’s General Store.

Rammat, 30, confessed to the capital offence which stated that between April 15 and 16, 2015 at Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara, he murdered Ghanie, aka ‘Brother’, during the course of a robbery.

He was represented by Attorney-at-law Maxwell McKay while the State was represented by prosecutors Tuanna Hardy, Tiffani Lyken and, Nafeeza Baig.

According to reports, Rammat was employed by the businessman as a handyman and also lived at the house.

It is alleged that Rammat and his friend, Kemo Tyron Evans, while being armed with a knife, robbed Ghanie and stabbed him to the heart.

Neighbours reportedly saw Rammat and Evans leaving the house; the next day, neighbours found the businessman lying at the back of his yard in a pool of blood, and with visible wounds to his chest.

Rammat was arrested three months later by Police in the interior.

In the High Court, Rammat apologised for his actions, while his attorney made a plea of mitigation.

Prosecutor Hardy asked the Judge to send a strong message to persons who may contemplate similar crimes.

In court, Ghanie’s daughter testified that Rammat was like family and even called her father “daddy.”

The woman broke down in tears as she faced Rammat and asked him why he killed her father.

Justice Kissoon ordered prison authorities to deduct time spent on remand from the 30-year prison sentence.

Kemo Tyron Evans will have to stand trial for the indictment.
