A fire of unknown origin completely destroyed the Sachi variety store on Regent Street, Georgetown early Monday morning.

The store is owned by a Chinese national Fa Sen while the building is owned by someone else.

An employee told the News Room that the fire started at about 02:00hrs on the third floor; some 20 persons were employed at the store and the business is not insured.

The owner Fa told the News Room that he has been managing the business for a year now and it was only last week that someone broke in.

The Guyana Fire Service responded to the scene and managed to stop the fire from spreading to other businesses; firefighters worked for hours to contain the blaze.

Businesses on Regent Street between Camp and Wellington streets are closed and the electricity in that area was also cut.
