The Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc. (GuySuCo) on Monday disclosed that it is offering a 5% increase in wages and salaries to workers across the industry.

The Corporation, in a statement, sought to debunk claims by the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) that it is only offering a 1% increase.

The Corporation’s Industrial Relations Unit had engaged the unions – GAWU and National Association of Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE) – regarding their proposals for wages, salaries and fringe benefits on February 7.

According to GuySuCo, the union’s leadership informed the Corporation’s team that it will proceed to consult with its membership before further discussion with GuySuCo.

The Corporation said it has been in discussions over wages and conditions with GAWU and NACCIE since September of 2019.

“Those negotiations are continuing. The objectives of the negotiations are to arrive at positions that are fair to the workforce and also which can be sustained by the Industry,” GuySuCo said.

On February 7, GAWU said it will consider the offer made by GuySuCo but did not disclose what was offered.
