Motorcyclist killed, pillion rider injured in Diamond accident
A 26-year-old motorcyclist, Calwin ‘Ron’ Nichols was on Sunday afternoon killed in an accident on the Diamond Access Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
Lotoya Kowes, a 28-year-old of Kaneville, Grove, E.B.D. who was the pillion rider was also injured when Nichols crashed into a car after losing control of the motorcycle.
They were not wearing safety helmets at the time of the accident, Police Headquarters said in a statement.
According to the Police, Nichols was speeding along the southern carriageway of the road when he lost control of the motorcycle in the vicinity of the M&M Snackette and began to skid on the roadway.
The motorcycle crashed into motorcar PNN 3622 driven by a 44-year-old resident of Diamond Housing Scheme.
The driver of the car told the Police that he observed from a short distance the dangerous action of the motorcyclist and so he stopped the car before the motorcycle crashed into him.
The accident occurred at about 16:45hrs.
Nichols, also of Kaneville, and Kowes were picked up and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where Nichols succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention.
The pillion rider received minor injuries and is presently warded at the said institution for observation.
A post-mortem examination conducted on Monday revealed that the motorcyclist died from multiple injuries.
The driver of the car who passed a breathalyzer test is in custody assisting with the investigation.
