Jagdeo pleads case to Joint Services ahead of voting Friday

Less than 24 hours before members of the Joint Services cast their vote, Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo sought to remind them that during the Peoples’ Progressive Party’s 23 years in power, they kept the country safe and invested in the security sector.

At his weekly press conference Thursday, Jagdeo sought to discredit the coalition Government’s handling of the security sector as he accused the David Granger administration of being unfit.

“We have done this for 23 years, kept our country safe…settled a maritime boundary with Suriname….did not have an incursion and recapitalized the force.

“We fought off a criminal insurgency supported by the PNC and Granger’s party…. We fought that off… a criminal insurgency that led to many people being killed, innocent people, as they pursued their cause with their ‘Freedom fighters’ that his party to displace the People’s Progressive Party…

“And in that attempted displacement, many policemen lost their lives, soldiers were shot at. So if anyone is unfit to take care of Guyana’s security, it’s APNU and the PNC,” Jagdeo said Thursday.

Members of the Guyana Defence Force, the Police Force, the Prison Service and the Fire Service are set to cast their vote Friday ahead of the March 2 general and regional elections.

The PPP is hoping to win the joint services with its Prime Ministerial Candidate, former army Chief of Staff, Brigadier (Rt’d) Mark Phillips.
