Golden Arrowhead hoisted for Guyana’s 50th Republic anniversary

The annual Flag Raising ceremony was held at the Durban Park, Georgetown on Saturday in celebration of Guyana’s 50th Republic anniversary which will be observed on February 23.

With displays from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and students of various secondary schools, the spectators who travelled to the venue were wowed by a grand cultural display Saturday morning.

The students showcased their talents through perfectly choreographed dances, national songs, chutney, calypso and other genres of music, celebrating the various ethnic groups of Guyana.

This was followed by a military parade and the highlight of the event – the hoisting of the Golden Arrowhead on the 180-foot flagpole.

The Golden Arrowhead was designed in 1961 by American Vexillologist, Dr. Whitney Smith who died on November 18, 2016 at 76 years old.

In 2016, the flag measuring 5 × 35 foot –the largest one ever –was created in 2016 to observe Guyana’s 46th Republic anniversary.

Guyana’s 50th Republic Anniversary is being celebrated under the theme: “Guyana Together; Reflect, Celebrate and Transform”.

The Flag Raising was attended by President David Granger and First Lady Mrs. Sandra Granger, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo and his wife Sita Nagamootoo and Minister of Social Cohesion with responsibility for Culture, Youth and Sports, Dr. George Norton along with other dignitaries.
