Several army ranks injured during explosion at Coast Guard base

Several persons, including ranks of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) are seriously injured following an explosion at the Coast Guard base in Riverview, Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

Preliminary information from persons at the scene revealed that ranks were offloading fireworks from a truck onto a pontoon when the explosion occurred.

Ranks were seen jumping into the river to save themselves. The GDF was in the process of preparing the fireworks to be used Saturday night for Guyana’s 50^th Republic anniversary.

Emergency personnel are currently at the scene; the News Room will provide more information as it becomes available.
