Gold miner reportedly robbed, beaten to death

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 59-year-old gold miner who was found in an unconscious state on the 111 Mahdia Public Road.

Dead is Roland Kanhai of Cotton Field, Essequibo Coast.

The News Room understands that between 20:00hrs on Friday last and 05:30hrs on Saturday, Kanhai was imbibing at a food mart and was later found unconscious on the road by a coworker.

Police said several persons in the area alleged that he was beaten and robbed by a male.

Kanhai was taken to the Mahdia Hospital where he was treated and subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC).

Kanhai died at about 10:30hrs on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old suspect, a resident of Moblissa on the Soesdyke Linden Highway has been arrested and is assisting with the investigation.

A post mortem is scheduled for Wednesday.
