President tells OAS mission he will not interfere in work of GECOM

President David Granger, this morning, met former Prime Minister of Jamaica Mr Bruce Golding and his team from the Organisation of American States (OAS) Observer Mission in Guyana.

The Meeting was held at the Ministry of the Presidency. President Granger, during his briefing, said that the March 2, 2020, General and Regional Elections were orderly.

The President reminded that the Elections Commission is an independent and Constitutional body. He assured the observer mission that like all of Guyana, he is awaiting the ruling of the court and ultimately, the declaration by the Elections Commission.

President Granger said too that it would be improper and unlawful for him to interfere in the work of the Commission.

“It would be unlawful. I have no role to play. The matter is before the Chief Justice and I will await the ruling of the Chief Justice,” President Granger said.

The Head of State also condemned the levels of violence meted out to school children, villagers and the police as well as the destruction of property.
