Containers with ballot boxes were on Friday removed from the Arthur Chung Conference Centre on the East Coast and taken back to the Kingston, Georgetown headquarters of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

The containers were taken to the Conference Centre last week after GECOM decided on a national recount.

But with an injunction in place blocking the recount, the containers were moved back to GECOM. Stakeholders say they were not told that the containers were being moved, but because they had representatives standing guard, they were made aware of the movement.

The Guyana Elections Commission has not officially said why it decided to remove the containers and take them back to its headquarters in Kingston.
