A fire which started in the wee hours of Saturday completely destroyed a two-story concrete building at Bent Street, Wortmanville Georgetown, leaving eight persons homeless.
Fire Chief Marlon Gentle said firefighters responded to the scene at about 03:00hrs and managed to contain the blaze and stopped it from spreading to two other buildings.
Gentle could not say what caused the fire but noted that it does not appear to be “accidental.”
A relative told the News Room that they woke up and saw the blaze and managed to run to safety. No one was injured but the family was unable to salvage anything.
Meanwhile, the Fire Chief said another house was destroyed by fire in Haslington on the East Coast of Demerara Saturday morning.
He said the single person who lived in the house lit a kerosene stove and went to bed after which the house went up in flames at around 04:00hrs.
The person managed to escape the blaze.
