A search is ongoing for a man identified as Ryan Khayum after a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Coast Guard vessel crashed into his boat at about 21:00hrs Monday in the Pomeroon River.

His wife, 26-year-old Chandanie Khayum was also in the boat along with two workers; they were returning home after selling provisions and coconuts on the Essequibo Coast.

One of the workers was pinned under the boat and sustained injuries while the other workman managed to escape unharmed.

The wife is hospitalised in a stable condition at the Charity Hospital.

“They can’t find him and she’s in the hospital with head injuries and to her shoulders and hands,” a relative told the News Room.

The News Room understands that the GDF vessel was returning from Charity to the Floating Base with four ranks when the accident occurred.

The GDF in a statement said a Board of Inquiry has been launched to investigate the accident.

The relative alleged that the four GDF ranks were imbibing before leaving the wharf at Charity and that the GDF vessel had no headlights.
