The number of known COVID-19 cases in Guyana remain at 67 as of April 22 and Minister of Health Volda Lawrence has identified Georgetown as the epicenter of the deadly disease.
During an update on Wednesday, Lawrence revealed that of the 67 cases, 63 persons contracted the disease in Guyana while four cases were imported.
“Fellow Guyanese there is a perception that because only 67 persons have tested positive out of 348 tests done that Guyana is not in a critical situation. We beg to differ because 7 deaths out of 67 cases represent 10.4% which is much higher than the death rate of COVID-19 presented by WHO that stands at 2-4%,” the Minister said.
The total confirmed cases also includes seven deaths and ten recoveries; three persons are in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of which one is critical.
Seventeen persons are in institutional quarantine and 50 persons are in isolation.
