Reg. One recount almost done, 367 boxes counted at end of Day Eight

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is expected to conclude the recount of votes cast in Region One on Thursday, paving the way for the start of Region Five. This is according to GECOM’s Public Relations Officer Yolanda Ward.

Fifteen ballot boxes were counted for Region One on Wednesday bringing the total for that Region to 93. There are 99 boxes to be counted for Region One and that region is allocated two work stations at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre.

Of the other eight workstations, two are allocated to Region Two, three to Region Three and three to Region Four.

On Wednesday, 11 boxes were counted for Region Two, 15 for Region Three and 14 for Region Four.

There are 783 boxes left to be counted for Region Four –the largest voting district, –57 for Region Two and 255 to be counted for Region Three.

The total number of boxes counted at the end of Wednesday moved to 367. This is more than 10% of the 2,339 ballot boxes to be counted in total.

At the end of Day Eight, 350 Statements of Recount (SORs) were tabulated for General Elections and 350 for Regional Elections.

GECOM is expected to make a decision on Thursday relating to increasing the number of counting stations at the venue to speed up the recount.
