17-Y-0 gold miner shot dead by businessman

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the murder of 17-year-old Dane Jerrick, a gold miner of Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara.

Jerrick was shot in the lower back by a businessman at Puruni Landing, Mazaruni River at about 03:30hrs on Sunday.

Regional Commander Senior Superintendent, Linden Lord told the News Room that the businessman, who is a licensed firearm holder, claims that Jerrick was lingering in front of his business and that is why he shot at him.

The Commander said four shots were fired towards Jerrick and after he began to run, one caught him in the back.

Meanwhile, other witnesses reported that Jerrick was walking on the road after an incident with some truck drivers when the businessman shot at him.

The businessman is in police custody and the firearm was also lodged.

The Commander further stated that the file is being prepared to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
