The Regional Health Services in the East Berbice – Corentyne Region has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of 25-year-old Hafeeza Mohammed known as ‘Maria’ who died hours after giving birth at the Fyrish Health Centre on the evening of May 16.

This is the first child of Mohammed and her husband; they got married in August last year.

Shortly after giving birth, Mohammed of Kilcoy Settlement told a relative that she was experiencing severe back pains.

The News Room understands the young woman was reportedly administered two tablets after which she collapsed and became unconscious.

She was subsequently rushed to a private hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. It was also reported that Mohammed haemorrhaged profusely.

The baby is said to be healthy and doing well.

Meanwhile, Director of Regional Health Services Jevaughn Stephen told the media on Wednesday that an investigation is underway.

“As it relates to maternity and maternal death, we have a zero-tolerance on it and when these things happen we open an investigation to ensure that nothing is swept under the carpet. The Chief Medical Officer has been informed; we would have gathered all reports including the autopsy for the CMO to pronounce on the matter,” Stephen said.

When contacted, the family of the young woman declined to comment on the situation.
