Farmer arrested after Police destroy $5.8M in ganja

An estimated $5.8 million in ganja was destroyed on Saturday at Vryheid’s Lust, West Canje Berbice.

Police Headquarters in a statement said they acted on information received and found about an acre of cultivation with several hundred plants and more than 6,500 seedlings.

A 24-year-old cattle farmer of High Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice was caught tending to the plants and has since been arrested and is being processed for court.

Meanwhile, at about 13:40hrs on Saturday, a 27-year -old unemployed resident, whose addresses were given as Adelphi Village, East Canje and Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, was also arrested with 27 grams of suspected cocaine.

The suspect, who was apprehended a short distance from his first address, is expected to appear in court soon.
