GECOM Chair to declare Irfaan Ali president

Irfaan Ali will be declared the ninth President of Guyana, Justice (ret’d) Claudette Singh, the chair of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) decided on Tuesday afternoon.

Justice Singh, at a meeting of the Commission, suggested that she will make a declaration based on the results of the National Vote Recount which showed the People’s Progressive Party beat APNU+AFC by 15, 416 votes.

She will be asking the Chief Elections Officer to prepare a report according to the figures produced from the recount. Once the CEO presents his report, the chair will have three days within which to make the official declaration.

Justice Singh said she has no power to annul the elections as called for by APNU+AFC and said that that party’s concerns could be addressed in a court action.
